Temporary Filling (Interim Stabilization Therapy)

Our hygienists have been trained to place temporary fillings.

Interim Stabilization Therapy (IST) is a temporary restoration filling procedure and important therapeutic intervention that is used to free a client from pain and prevent further damage to a tooth until the client can see a dentist.

IST requires no anaesthetic (freezing) and uses a fluoride-releasing material that will help to remineralize the affected tooth.  The tooth is prepared by removing any soft debris (plaque and/or food particles) and the filling material is placed.

Temporary fillings can be performed easily at the time of assessment on people of all ages with decay or a missing filling.  They may be placed in either primary or permanent teeth.

This is a timely treatment to prevent pain and infection and we are happy to be able to provide this service to clients who may have to wait several weeks before being able to have an appointment with their dentist.
