A sealant is a protective coating that is applied to the grooves on the chewing surface of the molars. The sealants protect the chewing surface from tooth decay by keeping germs and food particles out of these grooves. Permanent molars that erupt about ages 6 and 12 are the most likely to benefit from sealants.
